Germany: 10 June 2014: Europe – Severe Weather

In the past few days severe weather (thunderstorms, rains, winds, hail, lightning) hit parts of Europe; starting from France and moving towards northern Germany. Damage was observed mostly in Germany, as well as France and Belgium.

GERMANY

•Severe weather (strong winds, rains, lightning, hail) affected northern Germany on 9-10 June.

•As of 10 June, according to the latest information, six people have died in North Rhine-Westphalia, three of which in Dusseldorf, one in Cologne, one in Krefeld and one in Essen. Fires were reported at several buildings due to lightning in the north-west of the country, major roads were blocked due to fallen trees and power outages were being experienced locally.

•Winds and thunderstorms are expected to continue affecting several areas of Germany. An Orange Alert for thunderstorms is in effect for the whole country (as of 10 June 12.00 UTC).

BELGIUM

• Thunderstorms and hail affected parts of Belgium over 8-9 June, causing localised flood incidents and damage to roads and private property. According to media, the Waasland area near Antwerp, was particularly hit.

FRANCE

•Thunderstorms and hail affected also parts of France, causing localised floods, power outages (7 970 clients without electricity over the whole territory) and three people were slightly injured in Beauchamp (Val-d’Oise).

THE NETHERLANDS

•Severe weather affected also parts of the Netherlands, but no significant damage was reported. There was a red alert for the Province of Limburg
